Colonists

"Ungrateful little shits who die off and get pissy when you ask them to work hard labor on a shitty planet." - Anonymous

Colonists are your most important asset. The more you have, the better off you are. Attract as many as you can and take care of the ones you have.

What you do for them: colony buildings

Colonists are just people who live at a colony. They need to eat, they get sick, they want to have fun, etc. You help them by running government sponsored facilities at their colony, like hospitals, police stations, and other colony buildings.

If you take care of them then their happiness will increase and your colony will prosper.

What they do for you: taxes, food, and labor

All of your colonists who are not suffering from unemployment have jobs, so you can tax them to generate income for yourself each tick. You can also sell food to them and earn even more credits.

You can hire colonists to staff government buildings, build ships at your shipyard and also serve as crew for the ships in your fleets. Remember that anyone you hire is paid government wages each tick.
